Installation of Twonkymedia Server 6 on the Conceptronic CH3SNAS and the D-Link DNS-323

Twonkymedia Server

This tutorial is deprecated, please use the tutorial for the current version.

If you need an advanced Mediaserver, Twonkymedia Server is one of the best choices. The Problem is that the installation of Twonkymedia Server 6 is a little bit more complicated than just running a Setup. Before you go on, please make sure that the Fonz fun_plug is installed. The following article has only been tested on the CH3SNAS, DNS-323. An Article for other devices can be found here. If you want to update to the newest version of twonky (and if you’ve already followed this article in the past), then check this out.

This Tutorial will install the Twonkymedia Server in /ffp/opt/twonky/. All data created by the Software (Database, Covers and so on) will be stored in /ffp/opt/twonky/data/.

Before following the commands below, please take a look a this Website under “NAS & Beta Versions (Limited Support)” to determine whether 6.0.38 is the current version:

mkdir -p /ffp/opt/twonky/data/
cd /ffp/opt/twonky
wget http://www.twonkyforum.com/downloads/6.0.38/twonkymedia-dns323-6.0.38.zip
unzip twonkymedia-dns323-*.zip
rm nassetup.exe nas-installer nas-uninstaller install.nas twonkymedia-dns323-*.zip
chmod +x twonkymedia twonkymediaserver plugins/* cgi-bin/*

Now the binaries are installed. Now you need the starter-script:

wget http://wolf-u.li/u/186 -O /ffp/start/twonky.sh

And the configurationfile:

wget http://wolf-u.li/u/175 -O /ffp/opt/twonky/twonkymedia-server-default.ini

Now test if everything works by running the daemon-startscript manually:

sh /ffp/start/twonky.sh start

For advanced users: Run “ps -ef|grep twonky” should show several processes now

Connect your Browser to Port 9000 of the NAS, e.g. http://192.168.133.7:9000/

If everything works, activate the daemon permanently:

chmod +x /ffp/start/twonky.sh

Now you’re done 😉 Have fun with Twonkymedia Server!

  1. Hello,

I am a newbie to the DNS-323 NAS box, and was able to install this with your instructions with great success. However can you assist in getting the transcoding portion of twonkymedia server as I am trying to stream video to my directv-HR22 box and it needs special transcoding. I used mezzmo for my pc and it was able to determine the streams needed on the fly without configuration at all. Some videos play fine, some play without audio.

Thanks for the tutorial and thanks for any help!

    Mario

    1. Hello,

currently transcoding is not feasable as the NAS-Devices are probably to slow for that. Maybe a DNS-325 is better suited, but the DNS-323 is definitively to slow.

      Cheers,
      Uli

  2. Hola! I have my DNS-323 formatted as NTFS, will the Twonkymedia Server work if installed following your tutorial? or should I format the HD with linux?

    Regards, Ruben

    1. Hello,

how did you format your DNS-323 as NTFS? You should probably format it through the Webinterface, otherwise i don’t know.

      Cheers,
      Uli

  3. Hi ULi,

Can you tell me how to remove the twonky media server from my CH3SNAS?

    Thanks!

    Best regards,
    Fastbob

    1. Hi Fastbob,

      thats easy:

      sh /ffp/start/twonky.sh stop
      rm -Rf /ffp/opt/twonky/
      rm /ffp/start/twonky.sh

This will delete the hole folder for twonky.

      Cheers,
      Uli

      1. Hi Uli,
I seem to have a problem that my putty connection to my NAS coverted CH3SNAS to DNS-323 is being refused (netweork error: connection refused).
My goal is to remove all features like the Twonky media server but also the ssh login etc.
        What is the easiest way?

        Best regards,
        Fastbob

      2. Hi Uli,

Unfortunately I am getting an “connection refused ” error back from my putty trying to connect to my CH3SNAS with DNS 323 firmware. My goal is to remove all Twonky stuff and also the ssh login etc.
        What is the easiest way?

        Best regards,
        Fastbob

  4. Dear Uli,
I have installed twonky version 6.0.30 in the CH3SNAS(D-link DNS-323) a long time ago. Nowadays version 6.0.32 will be available. How to update to the newest version? Special guide for updating necessary?
    Kind regards,
    Ronald

    1. Hello Ronald,

I will update the Guide and publish a guide for updating. But i’m currently travelling, which is why this will take a while.

      Cheers,
      Uli

  5. Hi ! I have a DNS323 running FW 1.10 B07 (which is the best version I’ve seen so far) as well as ffp and twonky 6.0.32. I would like to enable audio file transcoding so that I could store my music in some lossless format (FLAC, m4a, AAC etc.) yet have twonky transcode to mp3 when streaming to my blu-ray. I’ve read a couple of threads on how to enable transcoding, but nothing has worked so far (even after having installed lenny). Any suggestions ? Thx.

  6. This was just so easy on my 323! Took 5mins start to finish and now copying media as we speak – many many thanks 🙂

  7. Hello,

I was in Search for a Instruction how to install with my Mac. It worked so great 😀

  8. Just one question. If I install this server do I need to get a license from Twonky otherwise it wouldn’t work? In their web site they say NAS versions “…can also be activated with a TwonkyServer 5.x license key.”

Also, I see they released 6.0.34. Which one from the list should I download for my DNS-323 and are the instructions for 6.0.32 still applicable?

    Thanks a lot

    1. You can try the software for 30 days, then you need to get a license.

Yes, the instructions are still applicable, i’ve just updated them.

      Best Regards,
      Uli

  9. Hello,

    My config is :
    ShareCenter DN320
    Twonkymedia server with licence

Everything was working fine but since I have rebooted Sharecenter, Twonky process is not up.

I desinstall all and reinstall but nothing better.

Have you got an idea Uli ?

    Thanks

  10. Well Uli, forget about my last post, it’s Ok now… it’s my fault I forgot the line “sed …” Sorry man !

  11. Is there a way to enable the transcoding on Twonkyserver configuration page. I have installed ffmpeg package and restarted the server, but it’s not working.

    Thanks in advance

  12. Way too difficult. I wouldn’t even know where to type the commands.
    Isn’t there a muggler approach?
    Media servers shouldn’t be a nerds-only thing.
